The Situation

Patient recruitment is one of the biggest bottlenecks in clinical research, delaying the release of life-saving medications by as much as a decade. MedVector set out to fix that with a telemedicine solution built to drastically increase clinical trial speed and accuracy by finding more diverse participants, faster.

Their HIPAA-compliant video conferencing device lets identified patients anywhere in the world take part in clinical trials through their own local hospital, monitored by their own doctors. Karten Design was brought in to help bring that vision to life in hardware.

The Solution

We leaned on our understanding of the clinical environment and clinician workflows to design a device optimized for the doctors, nurses, and patients who’d actually be using it. The MedVector Telemedicine Device ships to partner hospitals on demand, so it had to withstand years of constant setup, teardown, and shipping without fail.

We designed a compact, ruggedized aluminum case that organizes everything required, from diagnostic equipment to internet connectivity that holds up even in a hospital basement, into a single self-contained kit. Its sleek simplicity reassures patients walking into an unfamiliar procedure, and makes setup obvious for healthcare professionals who don’t have time to figure out a complicated system.
