The Situation
Historically, the words “root canal” have conjured fear. Patients dread the invasive procedure, the postoperative pain, and the follow-up visits that come with it. Clinicians, meanwhile, have long struggled to fully clean and disinfect the root canal system with the instrumentation available to them.
Sonendo set out to change that. Their new procedure reimagines the patient root canal experience from the ground up, and Karten Design was brought in to make sure the hardware carrying that technology, the GentleWave® G4 console with its dynamic touchscreen interface, delivered on that promise for both clinicians and their patients.
The Solution
Design, informed by research, carried this shift in treatment forward, combining hardware and software to inform, guide, and reassure. The GentleWave® G4 console uses sculptural surfaces and considered finishes to give this technology a physical presence that feels as advanced as it actually is.
Every functional detail was built around real procedural needs: portability, maintenance, and field service. Integrated handles and rugged finishes make the system easy to move between operatories, while battery backup and high-capacity fluid reservoirs keep it running through a full day of patients. A clear, step-by-step interface, reinforced with auditory cues, keeps clinicians confident through every stage of the procedure.
We reimagined every touchpoint in the workflow, from first-time setup through a busy, varied day of cases, to prep for the next morning. The result is a system that fits the rhythm of a real clinic, cutting down time and prep time so clinicians can see more patients and grow their practice.
